About the
author
Achievement and ambition have long shaped my daily reality as a woman and a practicing attorney at a leading global law firm based in New York City. I began in insurance defense litigation, where I rose into leadership, overseeing two departments and becoming known as the “queen of threshold summary judgment motions.”
Later, I made a bold leap into corporate law within private equity, stretching into a new arena that required an entirely different analytical skillset.
On paper, the trajectory made sense.
- And yet I continued to experience how ambition without alignment, success without gratitude, and progress without reflection could leave me feeling unfulfilled, unmotivated, or as though I was somehow “doing life wrong.”
I have been at my favorite hotel in Paris on Avenue George V, wanting for nothing. Picture it—a woman surrounded by Jeff Leatham sculptural floral installations, a painterly rug beneath her heels, gold silk chairs that feel almost cinematic, and the faint, tender melody from a piano.
- And yet I had never felt more alone in my life than in that moment.
I have experienced beautifully curated evenings along the Mediterranean with friends. Candlelit tables set against the sea, where laughter and open conversation flowed with ease.
- And yet I have also felt how repeated lateness or disregard for time can erode the respect that allows such moments to shine.
My work exists to help people, in particular women, pause long enough to ask better questions about the areas in our lives that feel too tight or off-balance. Often, we’re doing what we’re “supposed” to be doing, living a version of happiness that looks impressive from the outside. But, in truth, we still feel disconnected from ourselves and unhappy. I believe it’s crucial to re-examine what truly matters to us and what we want, whether it’s at work, at home, in our relationships or friendships, or just in life overall. And I’m not speaking about a vague “someday” or after everything else is handled. I’m speaking about now, as we need to prioritize ourselves as well.
DISCIPLINE MUST MEET DELIGHT
Loving my life shouldn’t have to wait for tomorrow, after work, an all-expenses-paid trip, or the weekend. Fulfillment should be built into each day, pursued with the same dedication and passion I bring to my career.
This is what I know: Being able to
navigate joy and embrace self-ownership
does not make me selfish.
It makes me accountable for my own happiness.
Past any platitude or empty positivity, I ground myself in the belief that I owe it to myself to have a contentment that can withstand demanding days, sleepless nights, solitude, success, complex relationships, disappointments, and everything in between on a daily basis. I continue to cultivate a rhythm that carries through my…
To Be Clear
THE BOOK OF SUMMER is my way of paying forward what I’ve learned throughout my personal journey. A self-help memoir rooted in my lived experience, not theory.
It’s not:
- A ten-step formula
- A “wake up at 5 a.m.” manifesto
- A promise that life becomes easy once you get aligned
It is:
- A conversation with intimate insight
- A direct look at how ambition, joy, purpose, and balance can collide
- A framework for going after what this woman wants in every area of her life
I write about:
- Building a life where fulfillment isn’t reserved for holidays
- Going after long-delayed dreams with both strategy and self-compassion
- Taking consistent micro and macro steps without burning out, as motivation and momentum can ebb and flow
- Managing time and energy
- Navigating friendships, love, family, money, and boundaries during growth
- Learning how to speak—with clarity, thoughtfulness, and kindness—to others and ourselves
I didn’t need to abandon my career, relocate across the globe, or engineer a complete reinvention. I needed a bold willingness and commitment to start where I was.
That’s where this conversation can really begin.
SUMMER TINNIE balances a fast-paced corporate career, travels often, and practices what she writes about: intentionally cultivating joy in everyday moments, aligning her daily choices with her long-term values, making space to assess what moves her, and refining her path with care, both at home and away. Her hope is that The Book of Summer will empower readers to stop putting their happiness off and start living the life they want to live on their own terms.
